Introduction:Measurement of academic achievement (AA) and its effective factors are major issues that attract researchers attention. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between students' academic performance and studying approaches.

Methods: in this cross-sectional and correlational study 291 students (male and female) were selected among the students of Birjand University of Medical Sciences through stratified random sampling method in 2014-2015. The instruments used to measure studying approaches included Marton and Saljo (1976) questionnaire. The total mean scores of the students were considered as an indicator of their academic performance. The data were analyzed in SPSS software using t-test, ANOVA The significant level was set at p≤0.05.

Results: The results showed that there was a significant correlation between surface approach and academic performance where surface approach accounts for 6% of academic performance. Fear of failure, lack of goals, memorization of senseless and irrelevant materials, and  were the strongest negative predictors of academic performance (p<0.001, r=-0.24). based on findings, significant differences were found in mean scores of students' studying approaches across different years (p=0.005).also,there is no significant differences between studying approaches and gender.

Conclusion: This study showed surface approach as a predictor of student learning outcomes at BUMS so,acquiring high score in surface approch needs to educational and training intervention for students and holding training workshops for teachers in order to using studying approches properly and improving students academic performance.
