Students' Attitude toward Combining Traditional and Electronic Education Epidemiology Course in Internship

  Introduction: applying new technologies in education is one approach to remedies of problems in medical education. Also, Harden principles (student- centered, problem based, integration, community- based, elective and systematic) is very effective in designing a successful course.  This study is a survey to determine efficacy of a workshop in relation to applying of e-learning approach as well as the Harden principles.

  Method: This is a cross- sectional study including 30 intern's viewpoints of Qazvin medical school participated in a blended education workshop during 2008- 2009. Data were collected by individual interviews and analyzed by descriptive statistics. Performance of participants were evaluated during workshop process. Epidemiology of disease and internet search has been taught as a blended course based on lesson plan. Finally, participants compared the epidemiology of disease in Iran and other countries.

  Results: among totally participants, 80% were satisfied from performing workshop. Although capability of internet search was found in 73.3%, 93.3% had some problem for finding related articles. Selecting the appropriate keywords was the most common problem. Interns believed that presenting this method, reduce time of subjects finding and better understanding of epidemiology.  They request for changes in other topics too.

  Conclusion: epidemiology can be taught through blended method. This method can enhance the level of educational objectives, motivation of learners, integration of issues and provide a more effective learning. In addition, innovative strategies for designing workshop as well as applying technology should be regarded.
